freezing cookie dough

Nothing is worse than wanting to use that yummy cookie dough from the freezer and pulling out a brick of it that takes hours to defrost.

We have tried many methods for freezing cookie dough over the years and this is by far our favorite way.

Line a dish with plastic wrap and scoop the dough just as if you were going to be scooping it onto the cookie sheet and put them into the dish.

If you make more than one layer of cookie balls then put another piece of plastic wrap between them so they don't get all stuck together.  Let them freeze for a day or so and then you can just dump them all into a ziploc or other airtight container.  Easy.

When you are ready to bake just let them sit on a cookie sheet for 10-15 min while your oven preheats.  But beware, they are very tempting just sitting there in your freezer in easy to eat little portions.

How long will it last in the freezer?  Honestly, I don't know.  Somehow it just doesn't ever exist that long.  But I understand it should last for a couple months.

And, as far as the scooper goes (we call it a "pooper scooper" in our house, pretty sure b.r.g.d. had something to do with that), we went through many dough scoopers, both expensive and cheap.  It doesn't seem like that complicated of a mechanism but they sure broke easily until we got this one 4 or 5 years ago.  It is an OXO brand, and we highly recommend it.

  1. I have frozen cookie dough balls for years and years (and they msyteriously disappear before I can actually make a whole tray--BOB!) But, I never thought to do the saran wrap thing, what a fantastic idea. I usually just put them directly on the cookie sheet and then put in containers after they are frozen. I'm going to try your way next time.
